Price variants at the salon - what you need to know

Just like any other day, a customer walks into your salon and is in dire need of a beauty transformation. You recommend some of your amazing treatments and the client instantly falls in love with your suggestions, and with the service in mind, all that is left is choosing the preferred specialist to get the job done. Any one of them will do, right? After the customer pays and goes about their day, all might seem fine, but your senior staff may feel a bit undervalued because of the situation.  But how exactly does it come to this? The answer - a lack of price variants. You may be asking yourself: “are price variants really that important in the daily functioning of my salon”? Although your salon may be functioning well even without them, including price variants would contribute greatly to your business.

Price variants and staff

Price variants are products or services that have varying costs, depending on factors such as the quality of products being utilised and an employee’s expertise  - in the hair and beauty industry, this most often relates to a service being provided by a number of specialists. It may not seem obvious at first, but they have a strong influence on your staffs’ work ethic. Imagine an experienced stylist working at a hair salon who provides the same service as a novice and for the same price. Any experienced staff member would feel undervalued in this situation.

Your experienced specialist may provide the service at a faster rate and with little or no mistakes. Using separate pricing for more experienced staff would show that you value their expertise. Additionally, this tactic works as a method of encouragement for novice staff members to work their way up in order to have a more prestigious spot in the salon.

More variety, more inclusiveness!

Every salon owner has at least once placed themselves in the shoes of their customer and looked at their business from a different perspective. One question almost all owners ask themselves is: “are my services reasonably priced, and do I offer enough options?" Comparing your prices to those of your competition is one way to verify the average cost of services in your area, but what about service options? A potential customer looking for a high-end service might be deterred by a 20% off balayage priced at $120, and vice versa. To entice both high and low-end customers, implementing variants is a necessity.

If you have multiple service providers that offer the same treatment, give them varying prices and track the effects. Potential clients that book online will be able to choose between a more or less expensive variant of the service. This gives you the perfect opportunity to catch both high and low budget clients, instead of just a single group. A month after updating your price list, check your Booksy statistics to see which options were most popular among your clients.
